Glycine(Cas 56-40-6) Usage

Uses

Glycine plays a central role in protein synthesis, serving as one of the building blocks of proteins. In the central nervous system, glycine acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter, contributing to the regulation of neuronal signaling. Glycine participates in several biosynthetic pathways, including the synthesis of purines (components of DNA and RNA) and porphyrins (involved in heme production).

Description

Glycine is one of the 20 amino acids found in proteins. It is often referred to as the simplest amino acid. Unlike most amino acids, glycine is not chiral, meaning it does not have an asymmetric carbon center, and it has a minimal side chain consisting of only a single hydrogen atom. Glycine can fit into both hydrophilic (water-loving) and hydrophobic (water-repelling) environments, making it versatile in various biological processes. There has been debate about the detection of glycine in the interstellar medium. In 2008, a molecule similar to glycine, amino aceto nitrile, was discovered in a giant gas cloud near the galactic center. In 2009, glycine was confirmed in a sample collected from comet Wild 2 by the NASA spacecraft Stardust, marking the first discovery of extraterrestrial glycine.

Hazard

Use in fats restricted to 0.01%.

Fire Hazard

LOW. Ignites at very high temperatures.

storage

Glycine starts to decompose at 233°C. Store in well-closed containers. Glycine irrigation solutions (95–105% glycine) should be stored in single dose containers, preferably type I or type II glass.
